We educate our clients to understand part of the very high prices you may pay for garden construction is because the contractor may have a high loss rate for plant material due to poor installation, poor sources or poor follow through. There are companies who have 1 year to 20 year prorated warranties. We will deliver great quality in a timely manner and be your friends til we drop over behind a shovel 30 years from now :) And one last comment on warranty. As you can guess we get great service from our vendors. My father-in-law taught us this over 25 years ago. Clients who choose to work with us also know we are not a bank and we require our clients to pay for all materials two weeks prior to us starting the project and we in turn write our vendors checks when they deliver product to us so they can also feed their families.

We also use an app on our ipad which allows us to track all cost related to a project and with a couple of swipes of my finger I can give the client a daily update as to where the project stands. And when they see everything involved line by line, they truly understand what it takes to create a great garden. We have found our open book accounting system to work great here in the midwest as it did for us on the east coast for 20 years until my sister died and we chose to sell that busiess to move back to the midwest to be closer to family. One comment above said to make the contract in your favor which I STRONGLY disagree with because then it will be a win-lose for someone vs.truly win/win. And from our clients view it is easier to see what the worse case scenario is and then be pleasantly surprised. IF we use less labor and materials you will only pay the lesser amount. We tell our clients this is a live document and we may have less labor but more materials and in the end, this is the max you will pay for the overall project. Our clients see what we pay for materials, how much we markup those materials (we have fixed overhead to pay for) and how much we charge for our craftsmanship. home? Now some clients thought process is well, I don't want to give them a budget because they will go right up to the max on the budget and there will be no money left for cocktails on the deck :) We use completely transparent spreadsheets for our projects. Should they build you a 1,000 sq.ft home or a 15,000 sq. IF you do not provide a budget window, that is kind of like asking a home builder to build you a house without a budget. IF your designer asks the correct probing questions including a budget window (s)he should be able to meet your goals. We do charge a % of cost of the project for our design fee, which includes visiting your site initially along with the second meeting to review the plan as well as out time to locate great materials for your project. If you are not charged a design fee up front, you will pay for it in the prices of labor or materials, the contractor is not supposed to be a non-profit entity.
